Audition Call Out - Detention

Monkey Baa will be holding auditions at ARA Darling Quarter Theatre in Sydney from 9th-11th July 2024 for the engagement of our brand new production, Detention. Based on the book by Tristan Bancks, adapted for the stage by Kobra Sayyadi and Callan Purcell. Directed by Randa Sayed.

About the show:

Detention tells the compelling tale of two young people from disparate worlds finding each other amidst a figurative minefield: Sima, a Hazara refugee fleeing a detention centre when her visa has been rejected, and Dan, a marginalised Australian boy raised in a caravan park in regional Australia. Their shared quest for a sense of home and safety binds them together. Wiradjeri artist, Callan Purcell, and emerging Hazara artist, Kobra Sayyadi, have co-written a compelling and moving theatrical adaptation of the work. They have been developing the script with a select team of artists from historically marginalised backgrounds. Under the direction of Randa Sayed the most recent development has begun to identify, explore and develop the theatrical telling of this story. An ensemble of five performers will use their bodies and objects to create the physical and emotional world that Sima and Dan are navigating. Underscored by drumbeat, the work is visceral, visual and aural.

The engagement is for August 2024 Creative Development and a planned presentation in 2025 (funding pending)
