Our 2023 Season is Live
2023 is all about igniting imagination, celebrating playfulness, championing respect and empowering young people through connection with the arts and each other. The Monkey Baa team are very proud of the season we have assembled, with something for young people of all ages.
Our favourite emus will return home after their 2022 national tour of Edward the Emu, beginning our season at the ARA Darling Quarter Theatre with a bang. We will debut Little Bozu and Kon Kon by Mayu Iwasaki, our inaugural show from the Penny Cook Creative Associate Program. We will present some of the finest theatre for young people from our friends at Shopfront (The Lies We Were Told), Melbourne International Comedy Festival (Class Clowns), Slingsby (Emil and the Detectives), and Ali Gordon and Alicia Gonzalez (Holiday Island).
They sit next to us in the theatre, workshop our shows in their classrooms, travel from small towns and big cities to see our work—buzzing with excitement, brimming with creativity, bursting with questions.
Our new Australian play Yong by Jenevieve Chang is making its way to the Sydney Opera House. Developed in Ballarat with an amazing creative team led by Darren Yap and in consultation with Chinese Cultural Consultant Charles Zhang and First Nations Consultant Richard Frankland, Yong is a celebration of courage and resilience in the face of adversity. Also returning to Sydney and setting off around Australia is our much-loved Possum Magic, a show about self-acceptance that will have young people celebrating their uniqueness and feeling confident in their own skin.
With a season of adventurous shows in our theatre and new works and old favourites in theatres in Sydney and around Australia, you would think we’d stop there! Well, think again. We are once again coming into classrooms all over Australia with our popular Teaching Artist Tour and our new Workshop Incursion Program, a two-week-long intensive that invites young people to take part in all areas of theatre making.
Young people are part of everything we do, they drive and inspire us. Join us in 2023 to celebrate them.
