School Holiday Workshops

Unleash your imagination and discover the magic of theatre

Join us for an exciting week of creativity and fun during the school holidays at our home, the ARA Darling Quarter Theatre. Our in-person workshops are designed for all skill levels and led by experienced Teaching Artists who are experts in both education and the arts.

Whether you attend the entire week or select individual workshops, our programs will challenge and inspire you to think outside the box and push your creative boundaries. With a maximum of 30 participants per workshop, you are guaranteed an engaging and interactive experience.

At Monkey Baa, safety is our top priority. Our Teaching Artists undergo special training, and our Learning team monitors workshop activities to ensure inclusivity and respect for all participants.

Theatremaking
Join the theatremaking magic with our interactive workshops! Designed to take participants behind the scenes, our hands-on programs cover a range of skills in theatremaking. Running Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday for ages 8-12.
Improvisation Workshop

Get ready to think fast and let your creativity flow as you create characters, scenes, and stories on the spot while having a blast. This improvisation workshop will have you laughing your socks off as you master the art of thinking on your feet and bringing spontaneity to the stage.

Through brainstorming, improvisation, and world-building, you'll learn how to craft a story, develop characters, and build a world that is uniquely your own. This workshop will challenge and inspire you to think creatively and think outside the box, leading to a truly original and exciting piece of theatre.

Pick up your pen and get ready to write your very own script based on a picture book in this exciting workshop. You'll learn how to adapt a story, develop characters and write compelling dialogue, as you gain valuable skills in scriptwriting. The workshop will challenge and inspire you to take your writing to the next level, and you'll leave with a script ready to be brought to life on stage.

Stage Design Workshop

Unleash your creativity and learn how to design sets and costumes for actors to perform in this hands-on production design workshop. Based on picture book illustrations, you'll learn how to bring stories to life through visual elements and create a believable world for your actors to inhabit. You'll learn how to use different materials and techniques to create sets and costumes, and gain valuable skills in design and stagecraft.

Frequently Asked Questions
What age group are the workshops suitable for?

The theatre-making workshops (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday) are perfect for young people aged 8-12.

The Edward the Emu and Josephine Wants to Dance workshops are perfect for young people aged 4-7. 

 

Where and when should I drop my child off for the workshops?

Drop your child in the foyer of the ARA Darling Quarter Theatre where someone from the Monkey Baa team will meet them and escort them into the theatre for the workshops. 

 Whether your child is attending the 10:00am or 01:00pm session, drop them off 10 minutes before the workshop begins. Pick them up after the workshop (12:00pm) or at the end of the day (03:00pm) from the foyer of the ARA Darling Quarter Theatre.

How long are the workshops?

The workshops are two hours long. Two workshops will run each day, with a one-hour supervised lunch break in the middle. 

What happens in the break between the workshops?

A team of three experienced Monkey Baa Staff (all with Working With Children Checks) will accompany the participants to Tumbalong Park for lunch and recreation. Please unsure your child brings lunch, water and sun protection if they are staying for the entire day. 

Can I stay and watch the workshops?

Parents and carers are welcome to stay and watch the workshops. We ask that they do not interfere with the workshops. 

What should my child bring with them?

Your child doesn’t need to bring anything to the workshops, we will provide all materials! 

Please make sure your child has food, water and sun protectionif they are staying for the day, along with any medical requirements (we have a first aid kit on hand at all times).

What if my child has access requirements?

If your child has access requirements, please communicate their needs to us and we will work to develop an individualized plan that addresses your child's specific needs to ensure they have the support they need to fully participate in the workshop. Please consider: 

  • Physical accommodations, such as wheelchair accessibility 

  • Audio or visual aids, such as closed captioning or audio description

  • Adaptations to the workshop materials, such as large print 

  • Additional time for completing tasks

  • Modifications to the workshop activities, such as providing scripts in advance or adapting an activity to be less physically demanding

  • Medical needs such as providing breaks for medication or treatment

  • Allowing for a carer or other support person to attend the workshop with the participant
